1 I saw my love by lantern light,
my new-born child so frail and fair,
and through the toils of that long night
I saw my love all lonely there.

2 I saw my love by morning light,
this holy boy, so sweet and fair,
and in his eyes I saw the sight
of all the earth in anguish there.

3 I saw my love by noon-day light,
the King of love, so strong and fair,
and in his hands I saw the might
of all the powers of heaven there.

4 I saw my love by evening light,
the sinner's friend, so young and fair,
and in his death I saw no fright
but life eternal springing there.

5 I saw my love by lantern light,
my new-born child so frail and fair,
and through the toils of that long night
I saw my love all loving there.
