1 In the cross of Christ I glory
towering over wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round his head sublime.
When earth's sorrows overtake me,
hopes deceive and fears annoy,
never shall the cross forsake me -
Christ shall bring me peace and joy.

2 When the sun of bliss is beaming
light and life upon my way,
from the cross his radiance streaming
adds more luster to the day.
Joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure
by the cross are sanctified;
peace is there beyond all measure
through the grace of Christ who died.

3 At the cross I see defeated
all that makes my heart afraid.
Now is Christ in triumph seated;
every evil foe dismayed.
Satan chained and hell frustrated,
death destroyed and guilt removed;
here my life is new-created
and the power of God is proved.

4 Once for all my sins are taken
in the sacrifice complete.
Never can my peace be shaken,
at the place where Christ I meet.
In the cross of Christ I glory
towering over wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round his head sublime.
