1 O happy band of pilgrims,
if onward you will tread
with Jesus as your brother
and Jesus as your head!

2 O happy if you labour
as Jesus did for all;
O happy if you hunger
and follow at his call!

3 The cross that Jesus carried,
he carried as your due;
the crown that he is wearing
he wears it now for you.

4 The faith by which you see him,
the hope which bravely burns,
the love that through all troubles
to Jesus always turns:

5 What are they but his jewels
of true celestial worth;
what are they but a ladder
set up to heaven on earth?

6 The trials that afflict you,
the sorrows you endure:
what are they but the testing
that makes your calling sure?

7 O happy band of pilgrims,
look upward to the skies
beyond your earthly journey
stands Jesus as your prize!
