1 Saul, breathing fire, Damascus-bound,
Fell blind and helpless to the ground.
The light of Christ was now his guide,
The risen Christ, once crucified.

2 With joy and speed Saul was baptised;
His zeal the Christian Church surprised.
Can he, they asked, be on our side
And preach the faith he once denied?

3 Yet Paul, his name and nature changed,
Across a dozen countries ranged.
'What law could never do', he said,
'Our Saviour Christ has done instead.

4 'Since God has sent his only Son,
A sacrifice for everyone,
How can we think God's grace to earn?
Not so: we love him in return.'
