1 True, merciful and brave the saint whose name
we celebrate on this his festal day;
on Britain's soil no martyr yet had died
when Alban at the feet of Romans lay.

1A True, merciful and brave the saint whose name
we celebrate, remembering his day;
on Britain's soil no martyr yet had died
when Alban at the feet of Romans lay.

2 True, for he brought the untold claims of Christ
and faithfully proclaimed the Saviour's word;
and Christ, who is the Truth, was known by all
as though the Lord himself were seen and heard.

3 Kind, with the tender mercy of our Lord;
when help was sought his arms would open wide,
and those who ran from cruel Roman spear
could find a refuge there at Alban's side.

4 Brave, as he knelt beneath his captor's gaze
high on the hill where earthly life would end;
and did a vision of another hill
where death was conquered, Alban's fear transcend?

5 Lord, with your power to love as Alban lived,
and in our hearts your mercy, truth and love,
the path of life will be the road to grace,
each daily hill a step to heaven above.
