When Matthew heard the Master call his name
When Matthew heard the Master call his name
he rose and followed.
He left his labours, family and home
and Christ he honoured,
his present, safe as gold and sure as time,
his future, clouded.
What dangers on the journey would there be,
what fears encountered?
No hiding place when Jesus led the way,
no shield provided;
his bed the earth, his roof the open sky,
his life surrendered.
And yet as from that day all Matthew's works
seem unrecorded,
so too may our endeavours in Christ's name
go unregarded,
the prize: to know that Christ shall come at last,
his work completed.
