1 Wild creatures long to cool their tongues
where flowing streams run clear;
so now for God my spirit longs:
but how may I draw near?
With singing crowds that surged along
I gladly took my part;
but now when I recall their song,
my God, it breaks my heart.
Why does such grief weigh down my soul?
Why such despair and pain?
I hope in God who makes me whole
and praise him once again.
2 In exile from the house of God
I hear the waters roll,
but they are like the swelling flood
in which he drowns my soul.
Has God consigned me to my death?
My enemies surround
to mock his name, destroy my faith,
and crush me to the ground.
Chorus
3 My God, defend my cause, I pray,
against their rage and spite.
You will not cast your child away;
send out your truth and light
to guide me to that holy place
where true delight belongs,
with music to set forth your grace
and worship you with songs.
Chorus
