With solemn hearts we recollect
That War May Cease
1 With solemn hearts we recollectÂ
the sacrifices made: Â
the brutal, surging tides of war,Â
the powers of hate arrayed;Â
when duty called and courage rose,Â
so many bore the cost,Â
in hope that justice would prevailÂ
and freedom not be lost. Â
2 Yet still across the centuriesÂ
the voice of Christ rings clear,Â
for news of war, and rumours too,Â
recur through every year: Â
in our time, as in every age,Â
some twist the word of God,Â
disdain the truth that Jesus taughtÂ
and spurn the path he trod. Â
3 In our hearts, too, there lurk the seedsÂ
of envy, rage and spite;Â
when fully-grown, these very thingsÂ
drive nations on to fight. Â
Though painful lessons from our pastÂ
re-echo down the years,Â
our greedy dreams still nurture threatsÂ
while half-truths stoke our fears. Â
4 We honour those who died in war,Â
yet pray that war may cease;Â
as servants of a suffering GodÂ
we pledge to work for peaceÂ
till melodies of praise and joyÂ
supplant the martial drum –Â
may your will, Lord, be done on earth,Â
and may your kingdom come. Â
