Born in 1987 in London, Samuel began to learn Classical piano from age 9, and developed a keen interest in composition during his teenage years. In 2006, Samuel won a scholarship to undertake piano lessons with concert pianist Richard Meyrick, and was shortly afterwards accepted to the University of York where he obtained First Class honours for his BA in Music, followed by an MA in Composition by Research.
During his University years, while at home in Norwich, Samuel served his church of Holy Trinity as a band keyboardist, and St. Mary Magdalene church as organist. During term time, Samuel was actively involved in the musical life of St. Michael Le Belfrey church in York, and was accepted for a year-long post as Music and Worship Parish Assistant in August 2012. This role developed his abilities as a worship musician and leader in a variety of ensembles, including small acoustic set-ups, amplified contemporary bands and chamber choirs, but it also provided him with opportunities to compose and arrange music; in December 2012, Samuel composed incidental music for drama sketches, which were performed by the Riding Lights in a carol service held at York Minster, and for the same occasion he arranged existing music for four-part choir.
In February 2014, Samuel returned to live and work in Norwich, and continues to serve at Holy Trinity church as a pianist. He is presently at work on a number of new songs for congregational worship, and since setting Christopher Idle's He Stood Before the Court in 2012, he has developed a particular enthusiasm for setting music to existing hymns, in the hope that relevant, yet lesser-used theological resources may be offered a place in today's congregations.
