Born at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia, fifth generation of a convict from 1st fleet 1778, who married a convict on 2nd fleet.

Educated at Moore Theological College, Sydney, Australia.

From his first marriage he has three grown-up children.

His second marriage was to Dorothy Olwyn Black.
